SUBURBAN INTERVENTIONS

The final four interventions are implemented into the site as a way for the local people passing by the bridge or exploring the area to develop their existing relationship with the shopping centre area. These interventions draw attention and celebrate the existence and location of the lake. They aim to emphasise the influence the body of water has on the suburb by making the community aware of the natural environments surrounding them. They all feature the colour blue to cohesively work together as small interventions.

I was drawn to the natural materials in the site but particularly the materials that were indicators or nearby water. A form of seaweed and moss were found on the banks of the lake but were hidden from the areas where there is more pedestrian traffic. This split in the wooden posts hosted an opportunity for injection into the site. I built material holders that slotted into the gap and displayed the seaweed to people who passed by. The initial model once put into site was small and hard to see being a single intervention.

The Location

The developed intervention involves six models slotted onto the several metal support plates. Each model hold either seaweed or moss. The top of the model is angled toward the direction in which most pedestrian approach the site.

INTERVENTION TWO

Located under the bridge this intervention makes connections to other location that the lake travels around. A lake can be seen as a system of joinery connecting suburbs, towns and significant locations and so this intervention draws on this concept through sound.

When the area and surfaces under the bridge are interacted with, sounds from areas further down the lake are played through a speaker. Once one sound is played, hopefully people are intrigued to keep exploring in order to trigger other playbacks.

INTERVENTION THREE

Every time I visited the underpass, I had the biggest urge to cross the lake through the water. I wanted to get to the other side but also remain clean and dry. I could obviously walk back up the banks and cross on the bridge, but this distance from the lake is a more intimate situation.

This intervention proposes a method of crossing the body of water whilst being within a close proximity of the lake. This allows the lake to be connected with at a visual dimension and physical as well.

INTERVENTION FOUR

Process

I positioned this intervention at the 5th metal support column on the bridge as it was the only spot on the pathway where you could actually see water. From other points on the bridge, only the reeds are visible.  This intervention creates a visual and physical connection to the body of water. The water is pumped up the tube from the lake into the glass sphere and then trickles out onto the pavement. The water forms a puddle on the path which will draw peoples attention and lead them to the source.
